DPhil Research

I was a member of a research group studying the effect of magnetic fields on the rates and yields of chemical reactions. My Supervisors were Prof. P.J. Hore and Dr. C.R. Timmel, whose group pages are here and here.

In the 4th year of my D.Phil, I was using an oscillating magnetic fields effect (OMFE) experiment which shows us how chemical systems differ in their reactions as the frequency and power of the field is changed. Papers soon, hopefully!

I had previously done a Part II project in the same group. In the past, I have been investigated magnetic field effects on singlet oxygen - an excited state of the dioxygen molecule (O2) - but have so far seen no effects. Hopefully with an improved experimental setup, and some photosynthetic reaction centre samples (which have shown similar effects before), we'll be able to see some change in the signal when a magnetic field is present! At the end of the first year of the DPhil, you have to produce a 4 page Transfer Report (PDF) and attend a viva to make sure enough work has been completed and that the future of the project looks rosy.

The singlet oxygen work write-up is available in pdf format.
